Ghiaccio Forte

The path
towards purity

The wine at Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte is born of conviction shaped by exacting decisions and deep agronomic insight, a journey that began with the estate’s acquisition in 1999.

Varietal purity

Sandro and Filippo Chia, driven by passion and guided by knowledge, pursue a singular goal: to express the soul of Sangiovese in harmony with the land. Every choice in the vineyard reflects this commitment to purity and place.

They found the situation in Maremma completely different, particularly the river microclimate - the Garriga - that dries up in summer and causes the grapes to ripen early without the right balance between the quantity of bunches and foliage. Sangiovese clones from Siena, Chianti and local biotypes of Maremma suitable for the Mediterranean climate were selected. The first harvest was in 2006 and produced a Morellino di Scansano that was a blend of different clones and 15% of international vines.

The meticulous selection process and the extraordinary response of the vines guided the decisions of Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte in a different direction, aimed at capturing the varietal purity of each individual grape, binding it permanently to the territory.

SANGIOVESE

Since 2018, the wine has been crafted solely from 100% Sangiovese, representing the appellation’s purest expression

A Morellino that reveals Sangiovese at full maturity - layered with aromatics, firm yet elegant in structure, and marked by a distinctive saline thread: a final, unmistakable echo of the sea and soil from which it came.

This is a wine of quiet intensity concentrated, yet luminous and refined. Silky on the palate, translucent in color, it carries the unmistakable signature of Sangiovese grown with devotion and shaped by the soul of the land.

RESPECT FOR ENVIRONMENT

Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte’s «philosophy of purity» is also reflected in the vineyard.

Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte’s philosophy of purity is reflected in the vineyard by an agronomic approach of ‘subtraction’ that aims to preserve the area’s extraordinary biodiversity, strengthen plant resilience and promote pure varietal expression. By giving each vine the perfect conditions they can bring their grapes to complete maturity.

In the vineyard, manure from Maremmano horses selected by local breeders is used. Grass is planted between the vines and then worked mechanically, without using herbicides or synthetic products. By using innovative techniques, soil hydration is balanced without irrigation. The winery will achieve its organic certification in March 2023.
