Technical notes
Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte sits on a solitary hill between Monte Amiata and the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the southernmost reaches of the Morellino di Scansano appellation. The estate spans 100 hectares, with 11 dedicated to 100% Sangiovese, the sole varietal in its DOCG wine.
The vineyards stretch across ancient marine clays and younger fluvial soils along the Albegna River. A distinctive microclimate - where sea breezes meet cool forest air imprints itself on the fruit.
Grapes are vinified by parcel, and gently fermented in stainless steel. The result is a pure expression of Sangiovese: aromatic, structured, and marked by a signature saline note - a reflection of the sea, the soil, and the land’s quiet power.
Silky on the palate, translucent in color, this wine bears the unmistakable signature of Sangiovese grown with devotion and shaped by place.
Label
The shape and exposure of the Ghiaccio Forte hill hold the key to its name. “Ghiaccio” derives from addiaccio—a word once used by shepherds to describe the open-air fold where flocks slept beneath the stars. “Forte” refers to the ancient Etruscan fortress that once crowned the hilltop, its ruins still visible today.
Together, Ghiaccio Forte means “the fortress under the stars” - a name that speaks to both the land’s pastoral roots and its deep, ancient history. The seal on the label features the face of an Etruscan votive sculpture, carved some 2,000 years ago and now housed in the Museo della Vite.
A symbol of protection and devotion, it echoes the timeless spirit of the land and the wine it inspires.
